A Self-Portrait Journey of Heart, Growth + the Waywind Experience
Since I restructured my business hours to set days and times, I’ve found something unexpected: more time to sit with myself. Not just time to work, or check boxes, nor for classwork or “getting things done,” but real, quiet moments to reflect on what I’m building—and why.
Balancing Waywind, motherhood, wifehood, school, and life isn’t easy. It’s a constant act of juggling priorities, yet it has offered me so much clarity. It’s taught me to approach my work and my clients with intention and care. It's given me back my drive, my heart, and my purpose.
It doesn't come to much surprise to those who know me to find that ambition is part of my nature—deeply rooted in who I am entirely. I dream expansively and act decisively. But ambition without reflection can be hollow. That’s why I’ve made a commitment: every step of growth must be grounded in integrity, empathy, and my favorite—humility. The journey isn’t just about technical skill - though that avenue has been so much fun to continuously delve into —it’s about creating an experience that honors the human story in front of my lens.
Learning With Purpose
Over the past couple of years, I’ve been investing deeply in myself—classes, mentorships, workshops, and self-led study. Some of it pertains to content creation and marketing; some to advanced photography techniques, studio lighting, and editing... but every bit of knowledge I gain has a single purpose: to better serve my clients and the stories they entrust to me.
Photography, I’ve learned, is not just about capturing images. It’s about capturing truth. Every adjustment to lighting, every composition choice, every edited detail is an opportunity to elevate someone’s story. It’s why I study so continuously, why I practice relentlessly, why I experiment endlessly, and why I approach every session with curiosity, care, and respect.
Some of the technical lessons I’ve integrated along the way include:
The art of light: Understanding how natural and artificial lighting shapes mood and emotion in a portrait.
Mastering the lens: How focal lengths, angles, and perspective influence storytelling.
Editing as craft: Not merely correcting images, but creating pieces of art that reflect authenticity and presence.
Client-centered planning: Crafting sessions that feel safe, intentional, and emotionally resonant.
Researching Quality: Partnering with those who help me bring your stories to life in real, tangible, lasting, quality heirloom pieces.
These aren’t just skills—they’re tools to foster connection, empathy, and trust.
Turning the Camera Toward Myself: the Self-Portrait Journey
Perhaps the most transformative step has been the hardest: putting myself in front of my own lens. To walk a self-portrait journey is to confront yourself in a way few experiences allow. There’s no one else to guide the session but you. Every pose, every expression, every frame is a negotiation with your own vulnerability.
In those moments, I confronted my insecurities, my ego, and my desire to “perform.” I learned what it means to be guided with patience, to be held in light, and to be encouraged to relax, breathe, and simply be.
I also learned that self-portraiture requires:
Vulnerability as strength: To be truly seen is to invite discomfort and growth. Sitting in front of your own lens demands honesty with yourself in ways that are both humbling and empowering.
Patience and persistence: Sometimes hundreds of shots are needed before one truly feels authentic. Every frame is a step in understanding yourself, just as every session with a client is a step in understanding them.
Presence and mindfulness: Observing your posture, your gaze, your energy, and the way you hold yourself is meditative. It trains you to be fully present, which translates directly to how I guide clients.
Self-trust: Without someone behind the camera guiding you, you must rely on intuition and your inner voice. That trust becomes a quiet confidence I carry into every session I lead.

Through this practice, I learned to embrace imperfection, witness myself with empathy, and
celebrate the nuances that make each person, each moment, beautifully unique. And in doing so, I became a better guide for those who step in front of my camera: more patient, more understanding, more present.
Through this practice, I discovered a truth I had always known but now feel more deeply: photography is sacred work. It’s not just about capturing beauty—it’s about honoring presence.
It’s about holding space for someone to step fully into their story and leave the session changed, seen, and valued.
Lessons for Photographers and Clients Alike
Whether you’re a photographer, a creative, or someone preparing for a portrait session, there are lessons that hold value universally:
Embrace vulnerability: Growth, beauty, and authenticity flourish when we allow ourselves to be seen.
Practice intentionally: Technical skills matter, but sympathy, listening, and observation transform a session.
Invest in learning: Knowledge empowers. Whether through courses, mentorship, or personal exploration, expanding your craft elevates your art.
Plan with heart: Every session should tell a story, capture a feeling, and honor the people involved.
Reflect and adapt: The best photographers are students of life, constantly learning from their experiences and those of their clients.
The Waywind Experience
This journey—of reflection, practice, learning, and vulnerability—has shaped what I call The Waywind Experience. It is more than a session; it’s a promise: that every client who steps in front of my lens will be treated with respect, kindness, and thoughtfulness. That their story will be captured with skill, artistry, and heart. That their moments, fleeting and precious, will become tangible, lasting pieces of art.
And in building this experience, I’ve learned something profound: humility and ambition can coexist. Vulnerability and confidence can dance together. Integrity is not a burden—it’s the compass that guides every decision I make, every photograph I take, and every interaction I have.
To my clients, readers, and community: Thank you.
Thank you for trusting me, for sharing your stories, and for allowing me to grow alongside you. You inspire me daily—not just in my business, but in life. Your courage, your vulnerability, your light remind me why this work matters, and why I continue to strive to be better, not just for myself, but for everyone who steps into my world.
In the quiet moments behind the lens, I’ve learned that photography is more than capturing images—it’s about creating space for growth, reflection, and connection.
And that, truly, is what makes the Waywind Experience whole.
